Mr Sam Lang RNVR

Mr. Hugh Lang, LT (A) NZRNVR

Hugh (Sam) was born on 26 January 1917, in Mataura, New Zealand.

Hugh Lang initially joined the Air Force but transferred to the FAA in the UK before aircrew training began.

Post war he married Pamela M C Holland whom he met in England during the war. She had been a WREN aircraft checker with the Stores Division of NAS Lee-on-Solent.

They married in England in 1945 and moved back to New Zealand in May 1946.

Hugh Lang retired as the Town Clerk for the City of Petone, New Zealand in 1978.

Hugh died in 1979 and was survived by his wife Pamela (now deceased) and their three sons, Richard, James and Alister.

The following is a record Mr Lang’s service (from available sources) from 1942 to 1946.

This surviving image probably relates to the above document and is annotated on the reverse with the course members names (Mr Lang is 5th from the left, back row.)

Interestingly they all appear to be “newly minted” – Temporary Sub-Lieutenant (A) RNVR.

Also, on the reverse it is noted: No. 760 Squadron – HMS Heron.
